Mashhad is a historic city

Mashhad is located in northeast of Iran and center of Khorasan Razavi province. This city with a population of 2,410,000 people is the second populated city of Iran after Tehran. The presence of Imam Reza Shrine, the eighth Imam of Shias attracts more than 13 billion pilgrims to Mashhad annually.

Kashafrood basin—the current location of Mashhad – has been one of the areas considered for inhabitation in Khorasan due to proper natural conditions before Islam. This area was first inhabited by non-Aryan people. Toos was the name of a city in proximity to the current Mashhad. In the Iranian myths, the main foundation of Toos city is attributed to Jamshid and its re-foundation to Toos, Iranian champion and generalissimo. Toos was completely conquered by Arabs during Ottoman caliphate, in the Islamic period of this region, a section of Toos province was in the centrality of Tabran city which included villages of Sanabad and Noghan which are a part of the current Mashhad city.
